  • Overview

    The Charge Nurse is responsible for supervising and directing nursing care in all clinical areas of the ASC according to PPOA’s policies, procedures, philosophy, and objectives. The leader in this role will coordinate and direct all patient care within the facility according to the accepted patient care standards.


    Patient Care

    • Coordinates patient-care activities with surgeons and anesthesia providers to provide continuity of patient care
    • Assists facility staff in identifying and solving nursing care problems
    • Oversees all nursing activities during emergencies
    • Participates in primary care of patients as needed and oversees clinical areas
    • Enforces nursing practice standards and licensing/accreditation rules and regulations
    • Recommends revision of patient-care policies and procedures as necessary to conform to accepted principles and practices
    • Respects patients’ rights to privacy, dignity, and confidentiality
    • Supervises care of the operating room area/equipment to ensure cleanliness, sterility, and operational ability at all times
    • Controls patient/staff traffic to help prevent infections
    • Applies accepted clinical nursing principles and practices to patient-care activities in the facility

    Staff Management

    • Monitors FTE utilization and makes staffing recommendations to promote cost-effective strategies
    • Prepares staffing schedules in accordance with vacations and holidays
    • Prepares daily personnel assignments and delegates duties according to experience and skill level
    • Coordinates scheduling of procedures with scheduling personnel
    • Evaluates the performance of all clinical personnel and works to continuously improve the quality of care and services
    • Assists in counseling clinical employees and makes recommendations for salary adjustments promotions, and/or termination
    • Participates in continuing education and utilizes shares knowledge with team
    • Assists with comprehensive and informative orientation programs for new employees in all clinical
    • Areas; promotes cross-training and professional development of current employees
    • Observes performance of all clinical staff members and provides feedback to administration


    • Coordinates and monitors operational activities for effective and efficient management of daily operation; reports deficiencies to Administrator
    • Oversee patient scheduling in all clinical areas
    • Audits clinical documentation to ensure facility’s policies/procedures are being followed
    • Serves as a liaison between patients, families, nursing, and medical staff to coordinate quality of service and care
    • Accountable for fiscal activities of clinical services: promotes cost containment, efficiently uses resources, analyzes reports and contributes to development of budgets, monitors materials-management documentation, manages inventory to ensure waste minimized but proper working conditions in place
    • Collaborate and work closely with administrative and medical staff in coordinating patient care
    • Participates in facility committees, meetings, in-services, and activities
    • Maintains facility and equipment to ensure cleanliness, sterility, and operational ability at all times; reports deficiencies to administrator
    • Shares input regarding short- and long-term goals of the facility
    • Maintains membership in relevant professional organizations

    Quality Improvement

    • Implement plans to improve quality of nursing care at the ASC
    • Recommends need for new/different items in regard to trends and needs of the facility
    • Reports deficiencies in services provided by contracted providers (e.g., pathology, radiology, housekeeping) to administrator
    • Assists in the implementation and maintenance of PPOA’s compliance program and adheres to established compliance policies and procedures
    • Assists in the implementation and maintenance of the organization's adopted performance-improvement program, policies, and procedures
    • Evaluates suggestions, grievances, and processes to identify opportunities to improve performance and quality of care
    • Monitors patient-care programs and reviews procedures, outcome standards, and criteria


    • Adheres to safety policies and procedures in performing job duties and responsibilities
    • Implements practices and regulations adopted to provide safety in the healthcare environment
    • Monitors the facility's physical environment and initiates methods for maintaining safety, comfort, cleanliness, and order; reports physical-environment status to the Administrator
    • Works with the safety officer to resolve observed or suspected safety violations, hazards, and
    • policy/procedure noncompliance
    • Submits information to licensed healthcare risk manager for preparation of risk-management
    • Reports
    • Ensures that OSHA requirements are met by clinical staff and that supplies are readily available
    • Ensures proper temperature, humidity, ventilation, and lighting to provide a comfortable and safe working environment; reports deficiencies to administrator


    • Registered Nurse with experience in procedures and/or operating room, PACU, or Pre-Admission in an endoscopic or surgical setting. Prefer one year of management experience in ambulatory care.
    • A current clear and active license from the State
    • Current CPR certification
    • Current BLS and ACLS certification
    • Current PALS certification, if required by ASC
